Fes Day Trips is an experience of one day to discover places around Fes such as chefchaouen, Azrou, Ifran, Meknes, and Volubilis…

CHEFCHAOUEN

is bounded by forests, the most fantastic valleys, picturesque peaks and gorges. Upon arrival in the small city, learn about authentic local handicrafts which you cannot find in other cities, such as woven blankets, wool garments, and hats ornamented with glorious colored threads. Marvel at the great monuments like Plaza Uta Elhammam which is lined with restaurants and cafes. This is a peaceful place to enjoy and watch the world go by. You can also see the kasbah, a greatly restored walled fortress, that now has a beautiful garden, and the Grande Mosque, built in the fifteenth century by the son of the city’s founder, Ali ben Rachid as well as other amazing monuments. Your guide will explain to you about Moroccan culture and history and he will be glad to answer all questions you might have. Your tour finishes back at your hotel or Riad in Fes.

IFRANE

Known as Little Switzerland of Morocco, Ifrane was built at the time of the French Protectorate as a ski resort for residents of imperial cities. Today, it still has its small-town charm popular during the winter months when the snow hits the ground and during the summer months when temperatures rise in the cities. Hiking trails start at the edge of the village and while the trails are unmarked, the level of difficulty is minimal. While the sights to see are minimal, with the lion stone Atlas the most popular attraction, tagine trout is a popular dish to try in nearby restaurants.

AZROU

Surrounded by nature and small villages, a break in Azrou is ideal for those who prefer a slower pace, Tuesday’s weekly market is an ideal time to visit the inhabitants who come down from the surrounding villages to do their weekly shopping (it is also when public transportation in this region is much more manageable). As you walk through the nearby cedar forests, you may be lucky enough to spot a family of great apes. To visit them around the region can follow the indications for the different waterfalls located nearby.

MEKNES

trip in 40 minutes from Fes, Meknes to visit the impressive sites of the Place Lalla Aouda, where Moulay Ismail, the basin of Agdal and even the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail give a glimpse of this once royal city. Take a photo with Giacometti’s watercolor sculpture next to the Agdal basin or enjoy a mint tea or coffee at El Hadim Square and admire the street artists and the turquoise and green Bab Mansour on the square.

VOLUBILIS

Visit Volubilis is best done in the morning before the sun shines on the open ruins. The vast expanse includes a forum, steam rooms, residential areas where up to 20,000 people live, olive presses and a triumphal arch. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the World Heritage site
